"I subscribe to the belief that we should allow the team competition to award the best team in the world, not necessarily the one with the least bad luck." -Dominique Moceanu

US Olympic Team

Two weekends ago, Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin did just what the whole country thought they would do. They finished 1-2 at the US Olympic Gymnastics Trials, giving them automatic berths to the US Olympic Team. Most people assume that Chellsie Memmel (given her STRONG performance at Trials) and Alicia Sacramone (given her massive vaults, great floor, and decent beam) will be on the team as well.

If you’re doing the math with me, that leaves two spots. Who will they go to? Many people think Samantha Peszek has one of them… but who will get the last spot? Jana Bieger is a three-time silver medalist from the 2006 Worlds in Aarhus, Denmark. She can give us a decent score on the Uneven Bars, and (form errors aside) does great gymnastics on the other apparatus.

Other fore-running contenders are Ivana Hong, Bridget Sloan and Shayla Worley. All three of them had less than lustrous performances at the Trials, leaving many wondering if they will be able to be counted on in a clutch situation in Beijing should one arise.

What do you think?
