Update on Daria Joura

Posted by Cam Anton on May 26, 2009

Daria Joura (Australia) on the Floor Exercise

Daria Joura (Australia) on the Floor Exercise

Many of us have been wondering (or speculating) on the status of Daria Joura of Australia. Injuries sustained in Beijing lead to sub-par performances from Dasha, sadly leaving her out of any finals.

I wrote to the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) a few days ago and recently received a response regarding her condition.

We are expecting that Gymnastics Australia will make an announcement
within the next fortnight regarding Dasha’s competitive status when they
confirm their squads for upcoming international events. Until that time
I can’t provide you with any concrete information I’m afraid.

Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Regards,

Simon (WAIS)

Hopefully Daria will be receiving some international assignments and get herself back into top form.

Good luck, Dasha!

Really, FIG? A ‘Kiss&Cry’ area?

Posted by Cam Anton on May 23, 2009

Today, the oh so wonderful individuals of the FIG annouced that artistic gymnastics will now have a “Kiss&Cry” area where we can watch gymnasts sit on chairs and receive their scores.

No, we won’t get to see more routines. We will get dedicated empty camera time devoted to showing gymnasts NOT doing gymnastics.

It is the belief of this writer, who has spent 17 of his 21 years of life in and around the sport of gymnastics, that the average fan of gymnastics turns on the broadcast to see gymnasts doing gymnastics. They don’t tune in to watch gymnasts put on/take off their grips or sweats, or hug their teammates and coaches, or march from one event to the next, or rummage through their bag for a hair-tie or wrist guards or whatever. They want to watch gymnastic performances. It’s bad enough that the Terrible Trio and their employer, NBC, manage to “broadcast” gymnastics by showing the top 3-5 gymnasts doing 2-3 of their routines. Instead of wasting the airspace with POINTLESS video of non-gymnastics, why doesn’t NBC show more routines from other gymnasts and update the scores at the bottom of the screen so we see more gymnasts doing more gymnastics.

The full, disappointing and gut- wrenching article can be read at International Gymnast Online.

Canada’s Mackie hopes for “consistent and clean” routines at Nationals

Charlotte Mackie (Canada) on the Floor Exercise at the 2008 Pacific Rim Championships.

Charlotte Mackie (Canada) on the Floor Exercise at the 2008 Pacific Rim Championships.

Team Canada’s Charlotte Mackie spoke with International Gymnast Magazine recently and talked about her gymnastics goals, coaching change, and even her sister Gael, a member of the University of Utah gymnastics team.

IG: How are you adjusting to your new gym and coaches?

CM: I’m adjusting really well! I love my new coaches and my new gym so much. I took about a month to adjust to a different atmosphere, conditioning, technique and coaching style. But it’s an ongoing process, and I’m still continuously working on adjustments. The hours aren’t too different, but I’m doing some early morning training before school, and the afternoon training aren’t quite so long.

My coaches really want to work on my athleticism, technical program and and developing my potential as a truly artistic gymnast.

The full interview from Charlotte can be read here.
