A top-ranked team, Stanford, after going 17-1 on the season, has been eclipsed for a spot at the NCAA Championships by the teams from Michigan and, the big surprise, Kent State University.

The Golden Flashes from Kent have been ranked outside of the top 15 for most of the season, but took advantage of a subpar performance by Stanford to clinch a ticket to the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio in just two weeks time.

This is a major upset for Stanford who had been expected by many to be a contender for the NCAA Championship. The incredibly talented girls from Palo Alto will have to regroup over the summer and make a run for the title again in 2012 when the Pac-10 becomes the Pac-12 with the addition of the University of Utah’s gymnastics team.
